Subject: Auto legend Carroll Shelby, father of Cobra, dies
Posted: Thu May 17, 2012 10:55 am (GMT -5)

Carroll Hall Shelby, the Texan who created the famous Shelby Cobra and uncounted other high-performance machines that have enlivened -- and in some cases revolutionized -- the auto world for 50 years, died Thursday night in Dallas at age 89. He had been hospitalized for pneumonia and his death was announced today by his company, Shelby American
While perhaps best known now for his Shelby Cobras and Shelby Mustangs, his auto foothold came as a notable race driver. And among his enduring, endearing accomplishments as a car builder, Shelby broke the class barrier that had made European brands the elite in road racing.

Representing the proletariat, his innovative, now-legendary Cobras with their "crude" Ford push-rod V-8s gave the high-revving, overhead-camshaft Porsches and Ferraris a sour taste by winning the Grand Touring World Championship in 1965.

It was a prelude to a bigger win: the famous 1-2-3 finish in 1966 in the 24 Hours of Le Mans by Ford GT40 Mark II's he engineered, breaking Ferrari's domination.

Shelby's death was taken hard by the many auto industry veterans and auto buffs who knew him personally, or only via his cars.

"He was a great friend. We did some good things together," Lee Iacocca said Friday, lamenting the passing of his pal, and neighbor in Los Angeles.

Iacocca was president of Ford Motor when Shelby pitched the idea in 1962 of a Ford V-8 in a petite British A.C. Cars roadster. That was the original Shelby Cobra and the first of many Shelby-branded performance road cars, mainly Mustangs.

Shelby worked with Iacocca when the latter moved to Chrysler, even breathing some respectability into the little Dodge Omni compact via turbocharger and the in-your-face name GLH -- for Goes Like Hell.

Shelby was born in Leesburg, Texas, Jan. 11, 1923. He affected the aw-shucks demeanor of the chicken farmer he once was, and said, "I never made a damn dime until I started doing what I wanted."

What he wanted was, power for the people, automotively speaking. "I love horsepower," he said more than once.

Beyond his efforts in the small world of hot-rodding, Shelby broadly influenced how Detroit automakers thought about high-performance -- not just power, but weigh and handling.

Before Shelby, Detroit's approach had been ever-bigger engines in big cars — for instance, the storied 409 cu. in. Chevrolet of the Beach Boys song. It replaced the 348 Chevy, which was replacing the 283, in those big Impalas and Bel Airs.

Shelby also proved in his life that hard work and bit of guile can make a hero.

He jumped from chicken-raising — his fowl all died of a disease one year — and to full-time auto racing, which he'd been doing on the side, in the 1950s. Initially, he drove in the work overalls that he used as a farmer.

He was a successful driver and won Le Mans in 1959 co-driving an Aston Martin. He finished his driving career the next year in a Maserati 250F Grand Prix car previously driven by renowned racer Juan Manuel Fangio. He had his first heart problems that year, quit racing, moved to California and opened a tire store.

But his greatest racing fame came as car builder and team manager, revamping a losing Ford race car — the GT40, so-called because it was 40 inches tall — on short notice to beat dominant Ferrari at Le Mans.

He did it the way he always has: Big engine, little car. The GT had been powered by a high-revving Ford 289 cu.-in. V-8, but Shelby yanked it for a monstrous 7-liter V-8. It proved more reliable for European endurance races.

And it let Shelby fulfill a promise — a threat, really — by Henry Ford II, who ran Ford Motor at the time. He had tried to buy Ferrari, but got a dismissive rejection from Enzo Ferrari.

Enraged and offended, Henry Ford vowed to "kick Ferrari's ass," and Shelby was his big boot at Le Mans. The next year, though, at the Daytona race, the Ford racers broke and Ferrari scored a "take that" one-two-three photo opp at a U.S. race.

Still, Shelby was a hero and a legend by then.

The litany of significant cars he created is long, running from the original 1962 Cobra through a sojourn at Chrysler that included work on the Viper, and a stint with GM via a failed Oldsmobile-powered car, then back to Ford. He was involved with development of Ford's GT 500 Mustang, the 2013 version of which is certified by the Society of Automotive Engineers as the most-powerful regular-production car in the world.

Some years ago, Iacocca happened upon on Shelby and a journalist dining in a Los Angeles restaurant. Iacocca plopped down at the table and he and Shelby started telling stories. Among them, how the two began their business relationship.

Iacocca said Shelby pestered him so persistently for money to build the original Cobra that "I finally gave him the money to get him out of my office."

Much later, in 2010, Shelby was facing two challenges: Mortality, and the changing nature of the go-fast auto business. At the time, he was taking 25 pills a day, tooling around in a motorized wheelchair and talking about passing the torch at his Shelby American company.

Yeah I am currently working on some dates for Keowee. We had a couple of tournaments up there at the beginning of the year. Once I get all the dates set and everything lined up I will post them on SClakes and have some flyers printed. Thanks! This tournament out of Twin Lakes this weekend should be another great tournament! We would love to have you come fish! We had a total of 29 boats for the last tournament on May the 5th out of Twin Lakes!
RIP Mitchell. I love that show and he will be missed for sure. I wish his brother all the best in life. I enjoy all those shows and it is hard not to get to know the people in them if you watch them enough. I love watching Deadliest Catch and when Captain Phil from the Cornelia Marie Passed away it was hard to take and he has been surely missed. I watch all those Shows. Would rather watch Discovery Channel, History channel, Animal Planet than about any other channels.......
_________________
Life Jackets and Kill switch's save lives! Subject: Crews to break ground on mega-ramp at Green Pond Landing
Posted: Tue May 15, 2012 1:58 pm (GMT -5)

ANDERSON — Crews will break ground this month on the $4 million "fishing event center" that Anderson County has planned at Green Pond Landing on Hartwell Lake.

Greenville-based Seamon Whiteside and Associates, the engineering firm that designed ball fields at the Anderson Sports and Entertainment Center, will be responsible for the design at Green Pond.

Plans call for converting the 50-year-old boat landing to a waterfront park with a six-lane boat ramp, restrooms, an amphitheater and a fish-weighing area. Enough parking spaces are planned to accommodate 150 trucks with trailers and 80 single vehicles. Glenn Brill, director of parks, recreation and tourism, said Anderson County has enough money to pay for about half the project, so it will be done in phases.

Brill was the keynote speaker Thursday at Tucker's restaurant for the Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce's monthly breakfast meeting.

He said Green Pond Landing and projects like it give Anderson County "transient economic development."

Documents.Green Pond Landing and Event Center Conceptual Plan
"You get the benefit of people bringing their money to Anderson County, but then they go home," Brill said. "You don't have to pave roads for them, or build schools for their children, or build jails for them to sleep in if they do something wrong."

Green Pond is near Portman Marina, four miles from Interstate 85 in Anderson and within eight miles of the heart of the city. The multimillion-dollar "mega-ramp"project is intended to transform the existing site, which has a single-lane boat ramp and room for about 30 vehicles and a few trailers.

"The buzz about this Green Pond project is off the hook," Brill said. "We have had meetings with fishermen and the kinds of people who will use this mega-ramp, and they can't wait to come here."

A portion of the project budget comes from money that Anderson County received in the 2010 settlement of a PCB-contamination lawsuit. Brill said the county can get at least $500,000 in grants for the first phase of the project, including at least $250,000 from the state.

A chunk of the budget comes from $1.5 million in settlement money from Houston-based Schlumberger Technology Corp. The corporation bought a capacitor plant in the 1970s that had dumped tons of polychlorinated biphenyls that got into Twelve Mile Creek, which flows into Hartwell Lake.

The first phase of the Green Pond project — including a boat launch, some parking spaces and public restrooms — could be finished by February 2013, Brill said.

When the second phase of the project is finished, Green Pond Landing Event Center will include 29 acres and three-fourths of a mile of shoreline.

The county also is looking at investing in trails and other recreation projects along the Saluda River, Brill said.

He said the county can definitely make money on the water.

A Walmart FLW fishing tournament that took place on Hartwell Lake in March had a $353,778 economic effect on Anderson County, Brill said.

"When we get this mega-ramp built at Green Pond," Brill said, "Anderson County has the potential to feel that kind of economic impact from fishing tournaments and related activities every week."
_________________
One tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor.....
There's no weeknight tournaments anywhere anymore that pays anything. They all want to fish for peanuts and pay back 1 in very 3boats it seems like. You can fish one and win it and be. Lucky to break even after gas and entry fees. At least that's the way it is around here (upstate). Plus there's a tourney every night of the week. That's another reason there's never any good crowds at these tourneys
PIERRE PART, La. — A cast member of the reality TV show "Swamp People" died Monday, a Louisiana sheriff said.

Assumption Parish Sheriff Mike Waguespack said Mitchell Guist was pronounced dead at a hospital. He had fallen while aboard his boat on the Intracoastal Waterway, near Pierre Part.

History, which produces the reality show with Original Media, said Guist would have turned 49 on Friday.

"We are extremely saddened to report that our friend and beloved member of the Swamp People family, Mitchell Guist, has passed away. ... Mitchell passed on the swamp, doing what he loved. We appreciate your respect for the Guist family's privacy and hope you join us in sending our thoughts and prayers to his brother, Glenn, and the rest of the Guist family," the network said in a statement.

Initial reports from deputies in neighboring St. Martin Parish are that Guist was traveling on the waterway around 9 a.m. when he fell, Waguespack said. The boat returned to a nearby landing in St. Martin and Guist was taken to a hospital. The cause of his fall is unclear, and there is no word yet on the official cause of death.

WAFB-TV reports 911 tapes were released later Monday, revealing the lengths people in the Belle River community went to try and revive Guist. Witnesses called the emergency response number and asked for ambulances or a helicopter.
