Took the explorer (2000 V8) to the shop today - it ain't getting much work. I boat a rice burner to save gas on the 130 miles a day that I am driving to work and back. Anyway I had hit adeer and need headlamp fixed, aligned, etc. Guy suggested some other items - among them new spark plugs for - get this - $231 dollars - am I missing something??? He didn't mention wires and I didn't ask.

If it's a 4.0L V-6 them plugs are a pain to get at, and some models recommend Bosch Platinum plus dual electrode plugs. They run about $6.00 each at Advance but I'm sure if you get them from Ford they will probably be double. That is pretty high though.

It is a 5.0 L V8. I should be able to replace them myself shouldn't I?? Ok well a guy of average mechanical aptitude

I bought plugs for my 2000 Z71 with a 5.3 motor and the plugs were over $80.00 my cost at my local parts store. They had to order them since nobody stocked them locally and after I bought them I found out these plugs are actually guarenteed til 100,000 miles so the new ones are still sitting on the bench. I did pull one plug and it still looks like brand new and it had 70,000 miles on it. The GM stuff has 8 coils and the wires are very short so if they need replaced it shouldn't be very expensive for them. Not sure about the Fords though. New cars are expensive to have repaired but really they never need much. I still don't need brake pads on the truck at 78,000 miles and I just replaced the battery, hoses, belts and anti freeze for the first time a little while ago. That's 5 yrs with no repairs at all, just tires, oil and filters. RM

The plugs are damn near impossible to get at & it takes all day just to change them.

As you may already know. The 5.0V8 should not be expensive at all to tune up. Just get some NGK spark plugs and a set of spart plug wires. I replaced them in my 5.8L ford a couple of months ago and it cost around $60 bucks. Now I have a 2002 F150 with a 5.4L. You have to take of the fuel injection coils just to get to the spark plugs!
