First start off by saying I changed my water pump impeller almost a year and a half ago. Last two or three times out have been fishing in some fairly stained and shallow water. I was headed down the lake this past saturday and motor shut off. No alarm or anything. Checked battery cables and they were ok (came loose last week). Cranked up and went on with no problem. Overheat alarm came on and I shut her down. Cranked her back up and looked back and telltale and there was nothing. Didn't run her for the rest of the day. When I got home I flushed the motor with hose throught the connection beside the telltale for about 5 minutes. I then hooked up the "ear muffs" and cranked her and no alarm and within a short time and a little throttle, water started flowing. The water coming out of the telltale is warm. What temperature should it be?

Obviuously I am going to drop the lower and check out the water pump. Is it likely I just had trash in the line clogging it? Any suggestions on anything else I should check? Thanks

The water should be hot coming out of thr tale -tale weep hole you have therostic in the top of both heads. that should open @ 140 deg. If the motor has run hot. I would at least check compression on all cyl. should be about 135 psi. cranking. Also check to see if your spin-on fuel filter has water in it. That will cause the alarm to go off. Low oil in the reserve tank will cause alam to go off. Could be oil cap not tight must have pressure from Engine crank case to push oil up to tank. Oil pump not turning will cause warring horn to sound must turn to proudce DC volt to trigger warring moulde. As far as cutting off I don't think the warning system will shout down engine. Some one else may know.

Back again. I changed the water pump (propeller was still in good shape). Compression ok. Maybe a teaspoon of water in fuel water separator. Took the boat out on memorial day and it ran fine. Went back on the water this past weekend and within a couple of hundred yards from the landing overheat buzzer went off again. I pulled the thermostats out tonight and tested each of them. Both opened but not at the specified 143. One opened around 148 and the other 150. I know we are only talking about 5 degrees but could this be the issue?

Try this, hook up the muffs and pull the T-stats out, turn on the water and start the motor. Let it run and see if any junk comes out of the block. Also check your poppit valve to see if it is stuck open. If it is it won't let the block fill with water.
