I got a 6 inch jack plate today from a buddy. Looking at it the holes in the plate where the motor goes are about 3 to 4 inches higher than the holes that bolt to the hull. That will make the motor alot higher than it is now and that's at the lowest setting. Does that sound right? The make is a Lightning Bolt and it's made in Charlotte NC. It looks like a decent peice, study and easily adjustable with jack bolts. RM

hate to ask this but are you sure you have it right? they can be mounted backwards. take the plate and make sure that it is totally level ( each piece) so it looks like a box then place it on the or close to the boat now remember also that it will sit differently on the boat both motor and plate so it may not be too high at all. usually the writing is read down from top to bottom
example: L
I
G
H
T
I
N
hopes this helps some maybe posting a couple of pics of it and the transom would help also, Steve

Well I think it can only go one way and it was together when he brought it over. He just took it off his boat. I'll look at it better and see. Thanks, RM

I looked at it good and it is together right and the holes are off by 3 to 4 inches. So my question is are all jack plates off or are they in line or even when at the lowest setting. If I install this as is the motor will be 3 to 4 inches higher with the plate at the lowest position. That seems wrong to me. I can redrill the motor holes and correct this problem if I need to. Anyone know about these things? RM

Yes that is correct.
That is the purpose of a jack plate. It sites the motor back further & allows it to be ran at a higher setting.
The set back is to get the motor into cleaner water & allow for greater leverage.
The vertical lift allows the motor to be higher. This reduces drag & allows the motor gearcase to "vent". Normally increasing top speed & rpm.
Watch your water pressure guage as your setting the boat up. if the water pressure falls below 18 psi then the motor needs to come back down.
