My '91 120 Evinrude is hard to start . It It seems like it is flooding when I try to crank it. If I let it sit for 30 or 45 minutes, it will eventually crank. Once it cranks, it will crank first time every time for the rest of the day. I have tried to vary my starting techniques but can't figure it out. Please help before I pop a cap in it.

Hi Scott,

If you are sure you are getting spark, try this. Prime the bulb untill firm then if you have a warm up lever on your control box raise it up. Next turn the key to on and push in on it to activate the choke hold it in for 5 seconds and then try to crank it, if it doesn't try to fire off on the first try repeat the key process one more time. Anymore than that and you will be flooding it. Also pull off your cowl and check the position of your primer solenoid's lever (red) if it is facing at 90* from the body that is in-correct the arrow needs to be pointing down. Look for fuel leaks on the carbs or fuel lines going into and around the motor.
You do need to confirm that you are getting spark on all cylinders first. Good luck. Fred

I have a tricky problem, but I think it finally quit working all together. Now I am not getting a spark on any of the plugs. It must have been an intermittent problem. I am going to try the reply that you sent out on bass boat central forum (by jig head, oh fred topic) by checking the voltage on the wires from the stator. My tack has also been intermittent and has stopped working all together. Could the problems be linked? Thanks

Many times with and OMC ignition system when one part goes they all go, the voltage rectifier/Regulator supplies the tach signal and controls charging. My guess would be the timer base.

ChampNman, I have a 1995 90 HP Johnson and I am beginning to experience intermittent time where my tach on my dash goes to Zero while running. It will sometimes jump back up and then back down. It is really intermittent. Does that mean I might be in the first stages of developing a problem?

Definatly check your battery connections for thightness and better yet if you have wing nuts replace them with either nylon insert SS nuts or SS hex nuts and lock washers. Put a meter on the battery when you are running it on the muffs output of the alternator should be more than 12.8 Volts DC at idle. Make sure your cells are full of distilled H20 also. Problem persists a voltage regulator/Rectifier may be in your very near future. If you have access to another tach try that first a bad tach is a lot cheaper than a VR.
