I had a GPS installed last year and ever since then I have went thru 2 and working on the 3rd battery. For some reason if I do not fish often the cranking batt will die. I charged it up before I went out Sun and it worked like a champ. As I went to put the cables back on though I noticed a small spark on the neg cable without have the pos cable on yet. Any thoughts on this or have I confused yall?

All GPS unit should be on switched power. They do a constant drain of 3 amps. Really ads up & can kill a battery.

On my Ranger ,I have a main power switch that I turn off, when I'm not fishing to avoid something like this. Don't know if all boats have this or not :?: I put my GPS in last spring and have not had any trouble ,so far----

May want to spray your post, with battery protectant,(can find at auto parts store) this will keep the arching/sparking down-------good luck Monk

So do I need to get a switch put in? Where do you get these at and are they hard to put in?

well you could just unplug your GPS from the back of the unit. like Mike says there is a draw if the GPS has memory on it. You can get them most anyplace (boat dealer) West marine etc. Not hard to put in but just unplug the unit and problem solved.
