Why use them and do they help?

Which size? 2 inch ?

They give you more setback 2" are about the standard they go between the JP and transom. CM

Too bad they can't go on after the Jack plate!

It's really for fine tweaking. You can mount them between the motor and the plate if you desire. My mind was mush on your originial post and was thinking about transom wedges. Totally different item. You still have to pull the motor either way to install. Example, if you have a 6" plate and need a little more then the spacers may be the ticket to give you 8" setback. Normally a 16-18' boat runs well with a 6" plate 18-20' will take a 8-10" plate depending on hull, HP, Load etc.
