Was reading your post and it seems your on the right track about the post. But I think it's more that the spool is not extending out far enough and that is why the line is loading up at the top.
What is the model number of the reel??
Since you have some other reels of the same kind check to see if this one has all the spacers on the shaft that would put the spool at the proper highth.
Also look to see if the barrel assembly is sitting on the reel properly.
Just a few things to look at while your playing telephone tag with service department.

This is a quick trick a reel engineer I work with told me....

The schematic above is very helpful. You can either remove or add the #9 washer(s) in order to balance the distribution of the line. Sometimes they come from the factory a bit out of tune. Adding a washer will actually lift the spool a bit in order to distribute the line closer to the "back" of the spool....and vise versa.

THAT DID IT!!!

The schematic is for the right reel, only mine is a size 30. I added an additional "#9" washer and re-spooled it and it worked like a champ. The line is evenly distributed obver the spool.
