I would like to know what type of rods (length & strength) are best for:[/list]
Top water, Crankbaits, Carolina rigging, etc... I am fairly new to the BIG LAKES fishing scene so please excuse my ignorance and help me get started right before I waste money on the wrong ones. Thanks

Topwater - Custom by yours truly St. Croix Avid AC66MM cut down to 6'2" with a pistol grip and a Curado 100B. I even use this for Super Spooks. It has a REALLY soft tip with plenty of backbone. I don't like a fast action rod for anything with treble hooks. This rod is also available in the Premier line (PC66MM).

Crankbaits - Light and shallow - St. Croix Premier PC70MM; Heavy and deep - PC70MHM. These are both in StC's crankbait series and are excellent rods. I use a reel with 5:1 gear ratio for cranks. Mine's a CU-100B I modified to 5:1 on the light one and a Chronarch CH-100A that is also modified to 5:1 on the heavy one. URL for both rods is

Carolina Rig - Avid AC70MHF - the Premier (PC70MHF) is VERY similar and $50 cheaper. Any 6.2:1 reel will do fine. URL is

As you can probably tell, I like St. Croix rods a LOT. If those are a little rich for your budget, check out BPS's Cranking sticks () and for a pistol grip rod.
