Jim went out for a bit yesterday and gave it a shot. Just manually closing the bail and I did not get any knots or bird nest at the spool during the cast. I still need to get all the twists out but with out a boat it's kinda hard right now. Thanks for the help.

One additional thing you can do after manually closing the bail. Grab the line and pull to take any slack out of the line. Raise the rod tip while doing this to keep the slack out.

You can never eliminate the problem, but there are several things you can do to minimize it:
1. Make sure line diameter does not exceed specs for reel.
2. Do not over-spool reel. Use a spooler to fill the reel to minimize twisting and keep line very tight while spooling.
3. Always close bail by hand and tug line when casting, as Doc and others mentioned.
4. Stretch the line before going fishing. some drag it behind the boat, but I walk it across my yard, spray a rag with silicone, and pull the line thru the rag to stretch it. I use a pure silicone spray on the line that you can get anywhere at 1/4 the price of the Blackmore's Real and line majic (which is mostly silicone). The silicone is great for cleaning reels and rods. I spray the line on my baitcasters with it...it actually helps to reduce the memory in the line.
A lot of guys recommend using FireLine or a braid to help with this...I've tried both, didn't like either, but everyone has there preferences. Stren Easy Cast seems to give me the fewest problems on spinnys, when you can find it. My worst problems were with the copolymers and other "anti-abrasion" lines on spinnys...they're OK on baitcasters, but nor for me on a spinny.
