bought a hummingbird helix 5 si today to replace my bow mount unit.....old one had transducer mounted on trolling motor....which I destroyed in the muddy waters of lake wylie yesterday.....but anyway, thinking about mounting the transducer on the transom and fishing the transducer cable to the bow....any thoughts on this....or should I just mount it on the trolling motor....already have lowrance gps at the helm....would be too much trouble to switch the two.....

it can be done but you will need a transducer extension cable if they make one. Plus your info ( depth etc ) will be off by however long your boat is.

I would look at putting it back on the trolling motor and taking the risk.

yep, cable will reach....but I was concerned about the side imaging moving every time I turned the trolling motor....might be nice to be able to scan forward though....guess it would take some getting used to.....would be a whole lot easier install if I mounted on the trolling motor though.....and I would like to be able to see directly under the spot i'm fishing from...took it down to a marine guy at lake wylie today, and he said it would prob be $300 to $400 for the install.....?????....nope....i'll let ya know how it comes out....thanks

I think they also make a splitter to allow 2 transducers on a switch. Might want to look at that option too..

got everything run and done today except mounting the transducer....still trying to figure out the best place to mount it to get no interference from the other transducer...anyway, will finish it up after work tomm and try to get to the lake to test it out.

If both units are on the same freq then your going to have interference. I would set one to 200 and the other to 83 and then you can mount them side by side and it wont matter. The side imaging works on 455 so it wont interfere with anything.

Ended up mounting the transducer on the transom just below and left of the engine mount...the lowrance transducer is mounted on the step to the right of the engine.....I guess it was just luck, but side view works great in both directions with both units running at the same time.....Helix unit works fine on plane too...I was willing to sacrifice that since it is mounted on the bow( I can see it from the drivers seat, just the speed, temp, depth etc)....still haven't played with the maps and charts, but the birds eye view is pretty cool
