On Tuesday, April 22nd I made my annual spring fishing trip up north to Lake Mahopac, New York. I spent the entire day fishing with my good friend Andy on one of the most fantastic smallmouth lakes in the Northeast. Lake Mahopac is only 700 acres but has some of the best smallmouth fishing anywhere.
Located only 50 miles north of New York City, this is a glacier formed natural lake. I got my smallmouth fix catching over 40 from 2 lbs to one I caught that pushed the scale to 5 lbs!...All were caught using small black hair jigs on 6 and 8 pound test line. The fish were just starting to move up shallow to make beds and we took full advantage of that. The water temperature was 56° and clear. This lake has two islands where we found most of these gorgeous fish around. I did catch one largemouth about 5 lbs as well but I had more fun catching these smallmouth. I catch largemouths in Hartwell but these fish are the bomb!....I'd rather catch smallmouth than any other fish except maybe peacock bass when I make my trip to Florida...If any of you plan on making a trip up north let me know. There are numerous lakes in this area that are just as good.
