Lake Wateree has been better than ever over the past few weeks and with rain falling as I type it's a good chance we will have another heavy weigh in Saturday at the CATT Wateree Final. Wateree bass seem to thrive in the muddy water that comes with the rains making them easier to fool with big spinnerbaits and jigs. Bass are moving up and some of the guys reported catching 20 to 30 bass this past Saturday at the March 26th CATT Qualifier. I usually fish around while the CATT guys are out. Saturday at Wateree in the first 5 minutes I had put a 5 pounder and another close to 6 pounds in the boat. We've had 5 Qualifiers at Wateree with the 1st event February 26th. The average 1st place weight has been 21.46 lbs and when the top 10 teams weight of each qualifier is totaled up the average is a whopping 17.17 lbs! 20th place has averaged 12.23 lbs and the 1st place Big Fish has averaged 6.80 lbs. We've averaged 47 teams at the Qualifiers and the average 1st place check has been $1,705.00. With 70 boats entered at the Final 1st place will be $3,500.00 to $4,000.00. We may top $30,000.00 in total payback this spring at Wateree. As someone who has fished Wateree all my life I've always tell newcomers two things.
