The fish was reported at 8 pounds and 5 ounces. The fish was weighed in at Hoyetts Grocery and Tackle, and the species was verified by a fisheries biologist Dan Rankin. The United States record is 9 pounds and 9 ounces caught in California. Jocassee is also the same lake the previous record spotted bass was caught in 1996. It weighed 8 pounds and 2 ounces. As of April 20th the fish has not been officially recorded in the record books.
As of April 2001 the following fish advisories from S.C.D.H.E.C. are in effect for the consumption of fish on Lake Jocassee: Only one meal a week of Spotted Bass and Largemouth Bass should be eaten. S.C.D.H.E.C. recommends these limits because testing of fish showed evidence of mercury. All other fish species in Jocassee are considered to be safe.
