Lakes Russell

The US Army Corps of Engineers began construction on Trotters Shoals Lake in 1974. This lake would be the middle and final of three inter-connected dams and lakes, with Lake Hartwell to the north and J Strom Thurmond Lake to the south. The lake would later be renamed Richard B Russell Lake in honor of the Georgia senator.

Lake Russell was created for flood control and power production but these days, recreation reigns supreme. Thanks to federal laws that prohibit exclusive private use along the 540 miles of Lake Russell's shoreline, there are 26,500 acres of largely undeveloped public land surrounding the lake.

Creating a border between Georgia and South Carolina, Lake Russell crosses county lines flowing in Abbeville County and Anderson County. Here are maps of the Abbeville area and the Anderson area.
