I have a Shimano Calais that wont go in gear. It will cast well but when you go to turn the handle it does not engage the spool. The reel is not but a few months old. Anybody have any suggestions?

Hey what model number is your reel?
Can you get the reel to go back into gear by lifting up and holding the thumbar then turning the handle??

To get it back into gear I have to hit it pretty hard with my hand. For $300+ you would think you wouldn't have to hurt yourself to use it.

WOW! Took a look at the shematic on this thing. Shimano must have taken all the spare parts they had lying around and threw them in this reel.
But they use a thing called a clutch pawl and a clutch pawl spring. It's possiable that the spring is broke or slipped out, and by hitting it your takeing the place of the spring.
They also use 2 screws to hold the clutch cam retainer in position could have some binding in there.
One question though. With the reel being so new might they warranty be the way to go??

Aquaholic -- if it's only a few months old, it's under warranty, so take it back where you bought it for exchange or contact Shimano Customer Service at 1-877-577-0600. Good Luck.
