Here's a quick tip. Many of the newer reels are now equipped with drilled "wiffle" spools. these reduce spool mass and aid in casting light lures. However, they an unfortunate side effect. The holes allow water to penetrate through the line, through the holes, and then get into the bearings on the handle side of the reel. On Shimano reels, this effects the spool bearing under the cast cap and the pinion bearing.
There is an incredibly easy and inexpensive fix. Simply wrap a few turns of Teflon pipe tape over the spool arbor (the part with the holes) BEFORE you spool on your line. This will help keep the water out of the bearings and save you money & aggravation.
